Share what-now?
I remember the first time I logged into SharePoint. The word “overwhelmed” comes to mind. Let’s be honest, SharePoint’s interface is daunting at first. For that reason, many users quickly write it off. Despite my initial revulsion to the complicated user interface, it began to grow on me. It felt like learning a new language, but eventually my hard work paid off, and now SharePoint saves me from headaches daily.
One of the most useful features in SharePoint is the document folder (or library in SharePoint terms). You can store all your documents on SharePoint where their version history is automagically maintained, so you don’t have to worry about losing your files!
When I first began using SharePoint, I had the hardest time finding things. Where did that folder go? How do I get back to that spot? Thankfully, I’ve got a tip for solving this very basic problem. It’s called “pinning.” It’s a feature of Windows 7 and I think it could ease the barrier to entry with SharePoint.
Pinning tutorial
Step 1 – Find a place
Find a website or place on SharePoint that you want to easily navigate back to. For my example I’ll be using a place where I keep my personal documents on SharePoint. Here is what it looks like in my browser:
Step 2 – Pin to your start menu
Click and drag the website’s icon from the browser’s address bar to the “Start” button in the bottom left of your screen.
Step 3 – That was easy!
Now whenever you want to get back to that page, you simply click the Start button or hit your Windows key and click on the button for that page.
Step 4 – Even faster
If you want to get to your “pinned” page even faster, just click your Windows button and type part of the name and hit enter. You can use this incredibly useful feature to quickly get to any of your programs! Here is a short video explaining this feature.
That’s all for now
SharePoint is really powerful, ask anyone who knows it well. Whenever I find a truly great product, I can’t wait to tell people about it. SharePoint is one of those products. I hope this tip makes SharePoint a little easier.
